Presentation Outlines

Ed Irwin:- Miniature Working Models- Ed Irwin is a machinist who lives in Orillia. He builds working models of unique miniature engines from scratch including castings, machined parts, spark plugs, and other such specialty components. Ed has an extensive knowledge of the original designs and is coming to meet with us to talk about his interests in building such intricate models. There will be a number of his projects on display for viewing during the evening.

Dr. James Wallace:- Keep the Air Clean- Jim Wallace is a professor in the Dept. of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at University of Toronto. Professor Wallace has been doing research on Diesel emissions and abatement as well as conducting studies on the effect BioDiesel fuel has on DPF's (Diesel Particulate Filters). Diesel engines provide essential motive power in Canada and this technology is fuel efficient and highly reliable. However, diesel engines emit significant quantities of gaseous oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) in their exhaust. Increased concerns about the health effects of diesel exhaust emissions have resulted in new legislation and stringent standards which present tremendous technical challenges. Dr. Wallace will speak on the technologies that are needed to meet these new standards and to make diesel engines clean as well as efficient in his presentation. Combustion system improvements, fuels, and after treatment add-on devices will be discussed as solutions to meet these new challenges.
