"The Historical Development of the Compression Ignition Engine"
Presented by Chris Walker, MAN B&W Diesel North America

28th September 2004

Because it seemed that the story of the Diesel engine focused solely on the achievements of Rudolf Diesel and, as such, was a little unfair to other engineering pioneers and earlier inventors, the Director of the Pacific Power Association suggested that a paper should be developed looking at the past, present and future of the Diesel engine. Chris Walker took up the challenge.
This grew to quite a task but Chris was successful in persuading MAN B&W to retain the services of Werner Oehlers, recently retired, to conduct the research and put together a detailed file.
The result is a very impressive PowerPoint slide show together with a booklet containing guidance notes in English that could be translated into any language. Students and technical persons who are involved with Diesel engines, but do not have a "Diesel background", could use this as a comprehensive learning tool and history lesson.
From this file, Chris has put together a paper, which we feel will be entertaining and interesting to both experts and novices in the diesel engine field.

Chris Walker is the Vice President of Sales for MAN B&W Diesel North America, located in Houston, Texas, responsible for stationary Diesel power plant applications in the USA, Central America and the Caribbean. Chris served a technical apprenticeship with Mirrlees Blackstone in the UK, who transferred him to the Toronto office of Hawker Siddeley Diesels & Electrics in 1972, delivering him into the hands of the veritable Roy Hughes. Over the ensuing 22 years in Canada he changed horses and joined the other big British engine group; GEC Diesels and spent 10 years working for his friend and mentor Gus Edlund, marketing and selling Ruston, Paxman, Dorman, Kelvin and Baudouin engines throughout Canada. He eventually joined the German engine company MaK as vice president of sales North America and almost 10 years ago was enticed to move south to Houston by MAN B&W where he resides with his wife Pat from Trinidad and their two children; Victoria Grace born in Canada and Christopher John born in Texas.
